MMMPO Freight Planning

The importance of freight mobility has been recognized by the United States Congress, which included increased emphasis on freight planning within the last four transportation bills: the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA); the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21); the SAFETEA-LU; and the most recent bill signed on December 4, 2015, the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.
The Morgantown Monongalia MPO considers freight mobility and intermodal transportation key parts of the overall planning process as it is important to the economic vitality of the region. The MMMPO will integrate freight planning as a part of the 2016-2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan Update,

Freight planning in the Update process will include the following activities:
  • Identifying freight needs and deficiencies
  • Developing regional freight profile
  • Identification of freight projects
  • Developing project evaluation criteria for freight movement
